INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Junior sees future in student affairs

Wimer Alberto loves a challenge.

He’s an orientation advisor, a resident assistant in Newing College, a member of the Latin American Student Union and a dancer with the campus group Quimbamba. He also loves to DJ parties, go to the movies and write songs and poetry. This fall, he’ll be a REACH peer educator in addition to working at Audiovisual Services.

“I learned from the RA job how to manage my time,” said Alberto, a junior. “You make use of the time you have in between things.”

Marinda Souva, assistant director of Campus Life for new student programs, said Alberto balances his time well and gives 100 percent to the groups and jobs he takes on. “He’s very conscious of his time, and he makes sure he follows through on his commitments,” she said.

Alberto, who’s double majoring in sociology and English, hopes to pursue a career in student affairs. His favorite writers include Voltaire and Dostoevsky.

“I like things that are really dense,” said Alberto, 20, who was born in the Dominican Republic, but grew up in the Bronx. “I like to get challenged.”

Souva said Alberto is mature, self-confident and fun to work with. “He leads by example,” she said. “He has an extra level of understanding of what it means to project yourself professionally.”

Alberto said Binghamton was the first campus he visited and remained his first choice even when he was admitted to several prestigious liberal arts colleges. He still remembers calling a cousin from the Events Center and telling him that this is where he was going to go to school.

Alberto believes Binghamton, with an undergraduate enrollment of a bit more than 14,000, is the perfect size.

“The school is big enough that you don’t know everyone and small enough that you still get personal attention,” he said. “There’s always someone new for you to meet.”
