Aspiring doctor finds time for art, poetry

Jennifer Scheinhorn blends interests in art, poetry and medicine while participating in the Binghamton Scholars program.

Scheinhorn, a studio art major from Riverdale, is taking pre-health classes in preparation for medical school. “I’ve wanted to be a doctor since I was in nursery,” said Scheinhorn, who will be a junior in the fall. She traces her interest in drawing back to a similarly early age.

She may specialize in surgery or pathology, but in the meantime Scheinhorn has fallen in love with poetry, thanks in part to Professor Maria Gillan.

Scheinhorn, who calls herself an extracurricular “dilettante,” served in hall government last year and hopes to create a version of The Public Journal at Binghamton. Similar publications at other colleges feature students’ anonymous journal entries.

Scheinhorn has a good mix of critical thinking skills and creative ability, said George Catalano, professor of bioengineering and director of the Binghamton Scholars Program.

“She’s outstanding,” he said. “What struck me most was her creativity. She’s incredibly reflective, which is not that common among her peers. She takes the notion of reflection very seriously. … She’s very refreshing in that respect.”

Catalano said Scheinhorn has been generous with her time and is always willing to help with Scholars Program activities.

This summer, Scheinhorn’s spending time on campus as an orientation adviser.

“I like the things they challenge you to do,” she said of the orientation staff. She’s developing her leadership skills and gaining confidence as a teacher through her work, she said.
