Binghamton basketball season comes to close
The fourth-seeded Bearcats made a thrilling comeback March 9 to defeat Boston University, 63-58. Junior guard Laura Sario posted a career-high 26 points in the game.
Binghamton lost March 10 to top-seeded Hartford 56-46 in the semifinals. The Bearcats finished the season with a 12-19 record.

The next big news for the University’s basketball program will be the appointment of a new head coach for the men’s team. Director of Athletics Joel Thirer hopes to make that announcement within the next month.
Thirer and coach Al Walker announced March 5 that Walker will be reassigned within the Athletics Department for the remainder of his contract, which runs through August 2008.
“Al and his staff brought in good-caliber young men to represent the University and he devoted time and energy to help our players achieve both on the basketball floor and academically,” Thirer said. &ldquo

Walker coached the Bearcats for seven seasons, including their first six at the Division I level. His teams compiled a win-loss record of 92-108. The Bearcats finished 13-16 this season and lost to Boston University 62-58 in the America East quarterfinals.
“I am very proud of the basketball program we have built at Binghamton,” said Walker, adding he believes a fresh voice and the excitement surrounding a new coach will be good for the program. “This is a great opportunity for me and my family to begin another career.”
