Scholarships available to students

By : Nicole Borawski

More than 300 scholarships are available to Binghamton students, and now is the time to apply for one.

Most of the scholarships do not require an application. Recipients are chosen based on their financial standing. In order to be eligible, students must file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), available in the Financial Aid Office or online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Dennis Chavez, director of financial aid, said the FAFSA is the key to receiving scholarships. “It does require time, and people need to apply early enough,” he said.

Each scholarship has specific deadlines and requirements. Awards target bookstore employees, geography majors, wrestling team members and students of many other descriptions. For details, visit http://bingfa.binghamton.edu/scholar.htm.

“Our Web site is the main source to find university-wide scholarships,” Chavez said. “Students should also check individual department listings for specific ones.”

He encourages students to apply to the ones that require an essay because those are often overlooked. “The chances of winning vary on the parameters of the scholarship and the pool of candidates whom apply,” he said. “The student with the 3.0 GPA will win over the student with a 2.5.”

Two major awards include the Faculty-Student Scholarship and the Michael V. Boyd ’79, ’87 Memorial Scholarship.

The Boyd scholarship is open to juniors or seniors, preferably of African or Latino descent. Boyd, a Binghamton alumnus and former director of the Educational Opportunity Program, died in 1994. The application deadline is March 30.

Laurie Seymour, assistant director of financial aid, said the Faculty-Student Scholarship funds 10 internships. A committee decides the recipients and placement of students in the internships. Applications were due earlier this week.

“Some scholarships only receive about three to 10 applications, and some receive zero,” Seymour said. “The Faculty-Student is given to 10 students and sometimes only 12 apply.”

Financial aid counselors are available by appointment or during walk-in hours.
