Soccer, lacrosse fields upgrades under way

By : Karen Fennie

Bulldozers are on site and work has begun to upgrade varsity athletic fields adjacent to the Events Center and West Gym. The $3.6 million dollar project includes two artificial playing fields with under drainage, as well as bleachers, lighting, a press box and a concession building with rest rooms. Existing scoreboards will be relocated for use on the new fields as part of the project.

The contractor — Pooler Enterprises Inc. of Fishers, near Rochester — is excavating, installing a storm water management system and relocating some utilities.

Eventually, the fields will be graded and a sand bed will be put in place for the Sportexe artificial turf. Installation of the Sportexe artificial turf system, being used across the country at a variety of high school, college and professional sports facilities, will allow the University to meet America East Athletic Conference requirements for hosting championship games.

The fields will be used for soccer and lacrosse, with one field to be used primarily for practice and the other for competition.

The project will correct problems with the existing natural grass fields, which are often slow to drain and dry after rain or snow. In addition, no lighting is currently available for the fields and those needing to use rest rooms must go to the Events Center or West Gym.
Instead of being mowed, the new fields will require rolling to keep the sand below the field surface smooth throughout.

Work will continue through the summer and is anticipated to wrap up in the fall.
