University improves in U.S. News rankings

For the twelfth consecutive year, Binghamton University is ranked among the nation’s top universities, according to the 2009 edition of “America’s Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report.

According to the latest edition of the magazine, which hit newsstands Monday, Aug. 25, the University ranks 34th among public universities and colleges, up from 37th last year, and 77th among all public and private universities. Last year, Binghamton ranked 82nd overall.

“I am very proud that Binghamton University has once again been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of America’s best universities,” President Lois B. DeFleur said. “We have some of the best students in the state and nation, our academic programs are superb, and our faculty and staff are outstanding — all which demonstrate our commitment to excellence.”

The annual U.S. News & World Report ranking is based on a set of 15 widely accepted indicators of excellence. Each factor is assigned a weight that reflects the magazine’s judgment about how much a measure matters. In its methodology, U.S. News considers academic reputation, retention, student-to-faculty ratios, student selectivity and alumni giving rate, among other factors.

In addition to the magazine, some of the results will also be available at www. USNews.com.

The U.S. News & World Report ranking is the latest in a series of recent accolades underscoring Binghamton University’s national reputation. The Princeton Review recognized the University in its first-ever “Green Rating” of colleges and features it in its Best 368 Colleges listing. In Forbes magazine, Binghamton is listed No. 11 among the nation’s top public colleges. The 2009 edition of Fiske Guide to Colleges again calls the University the “premier public university in the Northeast,” adding that Binghamton is “writing the rules on how to build global awareness and international programs into the curriculum.”
