New look for Web on track

New students and their families are being welcomed with signs and banners as they drive onto campus for orientation this month. Meanwhile, a team of people from across campus is preparing a new look for another University gateway — its website. One week after the fall semester begins, www.binghamton.edu will launch a new design with updated content for its main level pages and a number of departmental pages — along with a content management system (CMS) to make updating pages easier.

Drew Hill, the University’s Web director, has been coordinating a cross-divisional team
for the launch that includes ITS, Communications and Marketing, Academic Affairs, Student Affairs, the Graduate School, Undergraduate Admissions, and Alumni and Parent Relations.

“The new design will be the most striking part of the project,” said Hill. “We’ll have a number of templates for different pages, so departments and units will be able to have an individual look while still supporting the University’s ‘family’ look.”

In addition, after training on the OmniUpdate CMS, those closest to the information will have the ability to update and change content as easily as editing a Microsoft Word document. “The CMS will give people more control over their content, and the design templates will help the University have a more unified look that reflects our excellence across the board,” Hill said.

Hill’s blog (http://blogs.binghamton.edu/index.php/webproject) provides regular updates about what’s been happening behind the scenes. Postings will continue as the project enters the final stages of its first phase. “The Web is ever-changing,” said Hill. “We’ll launch this first phase on Sept. 2, but we’ll continue to migrate pages and content for additional departments after that, and, of course, people will continue to use the CMS to update their individual sites.”
