Fulbright recipient heads to Austria to teach English

Kathleen Bradley spent her sophomore year in Austria, fell in love with the country and devoted herself to going back.

Her determination paid off when she received word that she had received a grant from the Austrian-American Educational Commission, which administers the Fulbright program in Austria.

Bradley, who received her bachelor’s degree in German last weekend, will go to Austria as an English teaching assistant for high school-age students planning careers in economics.

“I really want to get fluent in at least two foreign languages,” said Bradley, who began taking Russian during her freshman year. “That’s my goal.”

Bradley, 21, grew up in Schenectady and traces her interest in foreign languages to her elementary school’s multicultural curriculum.

The dean’s list student said her passion lies in writing and reading other languages. She finds conversation so important that she served as host of a weekly
German-language radio program on WHRW this year. Bradley was also a teaching assistant for German cinema classes.

She hasn’t settled on a career plan, but hopes to forge connections in Austria and possibly attend graduate school there.

Bradley, who has traveled to several European countries, hopes to see more of the world, digital camera in hand. “This,” she said, “is just one leg of the journey.”
