Oktay Sekercisoy,
associate director for Dual-Diploma Programs,
Office of International Programs

As associate director for Dual-Diploma Programs, Oktay Sekercisoy has shaped the award-winning program that the University and SUNY have developed with four universities in Turkey. With his expertise, the program has grown to the largest of its kind within the SUNY system, enrolling approximately 450 students in Turkey and Binghamton.

Coordination of this program involves a commitment that Sekercisoy has taken to an unprecedented level, making Turkish students feel welcome in a new country and helping to immerse them in a new culture, even as they meet the demanding academic schedule the dual-diploma program requires.

Sekercisoy’s duties are detailed and numerous. He must accurately interpret and enforce academic policy and degree requirements and he is responsible for student schedules and registration, building up to 300 schedules each semester to meet the requirements for each student’s degree program. He has worked with Residential Life and arranged break housing, as well as coordinated early arrivals and helped resolve housing disputes. He has worked with student life and others to educate the Turkish students about rules and expectations, as well as to provide cultural experiences to help the students assimilate into their new lives.

Characterized as the foundation of support that is critical to student success, Sekercisoy’s supporters note that nothing seems to be too small for him to deal with as he strives to provide the basic needs for students.

A two-time summa cum laude Binghamton University graduate, having earned her bachelor’s in anthropology and master’s of science in education, Tami Mann clearly understands the needs of students.

Mann actively seeks to broaden her duties and improve the school’s contribution to students, the University, local schools and the community. She annually places about 180 students in local school districts, serving as an ambassador in the local community.

Mann’s supporters note that when she sees something that has to be done, she goes about doing it — and doing it well. She is a self-motivating, interpersonally interesting dynamo. In collaboration with advisers from other areas of campus and the Career Development Center, she has brought increased applications to the SOE from Binghamton University undergraduates.

Mann’s responsibilities include responding to state and federal requests for information; creating databases and managing statistical analysis of data for accreditation purposes; facilitating accreditation site visits; designing and presenting workshops for recruitment purposes; assisting faculty with teacher certification records; and revising and updating printed and online materials for the school. She also has contributed her time on numerous School of Education and University committees, including ones that eased the transition from the former School of Education and Human Development.

She is focused, effective, highly productive and generous with those who come through the office.
