INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Campus emergency test draws feedback

The Oct. 3 test of the campus emergency notification system, which utilized several communication methods during a 10-minute period between classes, accomplished what organizers hoped — it caught people’s attention and brought plenty of feedback.

Campus Emergency Manager David Hubeny said he received a great deal of input about the outdoor siren in particular.

“Our public address speaker and siren is designed to be heard outdoors only and isn’t intended to be heard by people inside buildings,” he said. “The siren is meant to be used when an emergency urgently threatens the safety of people outdoors and, whether it’s accompanied by voice instructions or not, people should take shelter in the nearest building and seek additional information when it sounds.”

Additional methods should alert those indoors to an emergency, including text messaging, voicemail messages, BU Alert line (777-7700), the Web, electronic message boards and campus cable channel 42. Those not yet registered for the University’s new text, voice, e-mail and fax messaging system (SUNY NY-Alert), are encouraged to do so by logging onto BU Brain at http://bubrain.binghamton.edu, selecting NY Alert: Sign Up or Manage Your Account and following the prompts. The system allows you to register up to three phone numbers for text messages, three phone numbers for voice messages, one fax number and two e-mail addresses.

“The University’s goal is to provide multiple means of communicating urgent information in a timely manner,” Hubeny said. “Results and feedback from the recent test will be used to enhance these systems.”
