INSIDE BINGHAMTON UNIVERSITY

Exemplary Student Award

These five undergraduates are finalists for the annual Exemplary Student Award. The competition, coordinated by the Homecoming Committee, honors academic achievement, University involvement and knowledge of campus history. The winner will be announced Saturday, Oct. 18, during Homecoming’s Tailgate ’08. All five finalists will receive an award.

The winner will get $2,175 to cover one semester’s full tuition; second place, $750; third place, $350; fourth place, $200; fifth place, $100. All financial awards will be eligible for use for the spring semester. For the fifth consecutive year, all prizes are being sponsored by Cleaner’s Supply.

MOLLY ARIOTTI

Molly Ariotti of Manlius is a double major in political science and geography, with a minor in French. After spending last semester abroad, she plans to return to France before attending a graduate program in political geography. She is the president of Phi Sigma Iota, and is a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Sigma Alpha and Gamma Theta Upsilon. She is the opinion editor of the student-run newspaper, Pipe Dream, and participates in the University Orchestra. She attended the Democratic National Convention in Denver on a scholarship, and also is a recipient of the Baldwin, Paul F. Gorman, Hymowitz and Rosefsky scholarships.
 


TINA BILLINGIERE

Tina Billingiere is a senior and is planning to graduate with a degree in human development and will pursue a master’s degree in public health. Billingiere was born and raised in Binghamton with her younger sister. A third-year resident assistant, Billingiere is also the head lifeguard at the East Gym. She has been involved in numerous campus activities, including Relay for Life, Hand-to-Heart and Residential Life programming focusing on charity. Billingiere also serves as vice president of the water polo club and social chair for National Residence Hall Honorary.

 

 
SHANE GALLAGHER
Shane Gallagher is a senior psychology major and plans to pursue a PhD in clinical psychology. Gallagher is a resident assistant in Mountainview College, a tour guide supervisor, vice president of Sigma Alpha Lambda National Leadership and Honors Organization and a member of Psi Chi National Honor Society in Psychology and Phi Beta Kappa Honor Society. The Manhattan resident is the executive co-director of High Hopes Crisis Intervention and Information Hotline. He has worked as a research assistant in the Psychopathology and Psychophysiology Laboratory and the Marriage and Family Studies Laboratory. Gallagher was a recipient of the 2008 Binghamton University Award for Undergraduate Student Excellence.

JADE R. GARDENER
Jade R. Gardener is a senior majoring in sociology and human development. Gardener, born in Jamaica and raised in the Bronx, is the president of the McNair Scholars Program, a resident assistant in College-in-the Woods, member of the Student Health Advocacy Committee, student manager at FitSpace and a tour supervisor in Admissions. Gardener plans to further her career by pursuing a PhD. In the past year, she has received the National Intramural Recreational Sports Association Wasson Award, launched her company, JRG Conglomerates LLC, and established the Legacy Foundation and The Vision Scholarship in memory of Binghamton students lost in the 2007-08 year.

BRADLEY SMALL
Bradley Small is a political science major from Oceanside. The senior is planning to pursue a career in law. Small is a former student assembly representative and former president of Newing College. He is the current Senior Class Council president and chief of staff for the Student Association president. Small is a founding member of the BU Zoo and has spent the last 13 summers at Camp Green Lane, working as a counselor and group leader. Small, a former intern for U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, is a member of Phi Eta Sigma, Pi Sigma Alpha and Sigma Alpha Lambda.
