By : Tina Paknejad

Homecoming 2009 — scheduled for Friday-Sunday, Oct. 2-4 — will have a number of enlightening and entertaining lectures and presentations.

Jay S. Benet '74 graduate and vice chairman/CFO of Travelers Insurance, will discuss a leader’s ability to maximize three key resources — money, people and information — to increase performance and strategically plan for success. That session will take place in the Anderson Center Reception Room at 2:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 2.

The Geology Department will host an open house, seminar and tea for its graduates in the Science 1 Geology Lounge, beginning at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Also that afternoon, on the Library Tower’s 12th floor, the Philosophy Department will have its second annual reunion, which includes a reception to celebrate philosophical creativity and imagination.

Harpur College alumni, faculty and students will have a panel discussion on whether liberal arts values have disappeared because of the pre-professionalism focus of many students today.

The discussion, “Dead or Alive? A Liberal Arts Education,” will start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 3, in FA-245. Panelists will include Gerald Kadish, distinguished teaching professor of history, and Anthony Preus, distinguished teaching professor of philosophy and College-in-the-Woods faculty master.

Homecoming also will offer the chance to explore the unique artwork created by Jacob Landau (1917-2001), a printmaker, painter, humanist and teacher.

His print and watercolor exhibit will feature a Holocaust Suite. Viewings take place 7-9 p.m. Friday and 1-4 p.m. Saturday in the Fine Arts Building’s Rosefsky Gallery.
