Faculty Senate OKs SOOT recommendations

At its last meeting of the 2009-2010 academic year, the Faculty Senate voted to implement the eight recommendations put forth by the Faculty Senate SOOTs Task Force.

Recommendations include that SOOTs should not be the only tools used to evaluate teaching and that they should be used to improve instruction. In addition, any release of SOOTs data should be accompanied by cover material “clarifying their intended purpose, proper use and interpretation, and potential abuse” and any release of data should be monitored. The ability to customize SOOT forms to some extent will also move forward as one of the approved recommendations.

The Senate also discussed the report of its ad-hoc committee on academics and athletics, which was charged with considering the cost of running the University’s NCAA Division I athletics program, as well as how the University’s involvement in NCAA Division I athletics affects its academic mission. The report summary states that Binghamton is “within typical budget ranges” for NCAA Division I programs.

Regarding academic standards, the report states that “examples of continued campus academic excellence appear in various forms” and “...there seems to be no reason to suspect that athletics had had a net negative impact; over the past decade, Binghamton University has grown and improved.”

Academic and behavioral problems at Binghamton “appear localized to a few members of one team,” the report states. “Across the University, the Division I athletics program appears not to have had a negative impact on academic standards.”

In other business, the Senate approved degree candidates, elected Luiza Moreira, associate professor of comparative literature, vice chair; and Karen Bromley, distinguished teaching professor of education, secretary, of the Faculty Senate Procedures Committee.
