Homecoming to bring campus and local community together
BINGHAMTON, NY – The biggest annual on-campus event for alumni – Homecoming 2010 – will take place Friday-Sunday, October 8-10. Each year, about 1,000 graduates and their family members return to campus for a variety of educational and fun activities. Many events are open to the local community.
The public is invited to attend Homecoming’s signature event – a tailgate party starting at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Events Center parking lot. The Alumni Association, which is organizing the weekend’s events, invites people to bring their grills and food to an outdoor barbecue that leads into the 7 p.m. men’s soccer game against the University of Vermont in the Bearcats Sports Complex. A fireworks display will follow the game.
The opening reception at 5 p.m. Friday will include the premiere of a video celebrating 60 years of Harpur College history, and the presentation of the Alumni Association Special Recognition Awards in Old Union Hall of the University Union. A wine and cheese reception, at 7 p.m., in front of the Events Center, will feature wines from alumni vintners.
The acrobatic and comedic dance company Galumpha, featuring Binghamton University alumni, will perform at 2:30 p.m. Saturday in the Watters Theater of the Anderson Center. Metropolitan Opera tenor Raul Melo – also a Binghamton graduate – will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Osterhout Concert Theater, also in the Anderson Center.
Homecoming 2010 will also celebrate the 40th anniversary of the School of Management and 40th anniversary of Colonial News/Pipe Dream. The weekend will have reunions for the classes of 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1985, 2000 and 2005.
