Speaker and Panel to Discuss HIV Prevention Study

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Institute for Intergenerational Studies at Binghamton University will host a panel of community practitioners and professionals for a community discussion about an HIV prevention study.  The panel, which is free and open to the public, will be held from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 4, in the University Downtown Center.

The study shows that high-risk individuals who took a daily medication, experience significantly fewer infections than those who took a placebo. The study, reported in the Nov. 23, 2010 New England Journal of Medicine, is the first evidence that this new HIV prevention method, called pre-exposure prophylaxis or PrEP, reduces HIV infection in people at increased risk of infection.

James Maynard, associate director for community engagement with Fenway Health in Boston, will be the guest speaker.  Panelists include Barbara Chaffee, MD; John Barry, STAP executive director; Josephine Allen, professor of social work in the College of Community and Public Affairs.

To pre-register, contact Robin Pape at rpape1@binghamton.edu or for more information about this program, visit: www.binghamton.edu/ifis.
