Binghamton University to host acclaimed documentary screening

BINGHAMTON, NY – The Center for Civic Engagement at Binghamton University will host a screening of The Lottery, an acclaimed documentary by Madeleine Sacker. The screening, which is free and open to the public, will be held at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 3, in Lecture Hall 10 on the University campus.

The Lottery has received accolades for its portrayal of the public school lottery system in New York City, which allows chosen children to attend higher achieving charter schools outside of their zoned residential area.  While the movie focuses on children and families from Harlem and the Bronx in New York City, the issues that are uncovered, and the solutions that are proposed, are those of the education reform movement as a whole.

This program, which is co-sponsored by the University’s Alumni Office and the School of Education, will include a short presentation and a question and answer session.
