Chemistry symposium will honor retiring professor; feature two Nobel Laureates
BINGHAMTON, NY – The Binghamton University Department of Chemistry will host a symposium to honor Distinguished Professor John Eisch. Free and open to the public, the event will begin at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28, and continue through mid-day Saturday, Oct. 29, in the Mandela Room of the University Union.
Two Nobel Laureates, Roald Hoffmann, Cornell University, 1981; and Ei-ichi Negishi, Purdue University, 2010, will be keynote speakers. Three of Eisch’s former students, Xian Shi '96, John N. Gitua '05 and Renuka N. Manchanayakage, '08, who all earned their doctoral degrees in chemistry at Binghamton, will be among the many accomplished researchers discussing their research in organometallic chemistry, a branch of chemistry concerned with metal-containing reagents widely used to synthesize polymers like polyethylene and synthetic rubber and diverse pharmaceuticals.
During his nearly 40-year tenure at Binghamton, Eisch established an internationally recognized research program in organometallic chemistry. The symposium will recognize his many achievements and celebrate his 80th birthday and upcoming retirement.
