Binghamton University conducts community-wide disaster drill

BINGHAMTON, NY – A community-wide disaster drill coordinated by Binghamton University’s Decker School of Nursing students, faculty and staff will begin at 9:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 1, in the University Events Center.

Over 300 people are expected to participate in the drill, which will incorporate a mock scenario of an earthquake hitting Schoharie County, New York. The injured residents, played by students and children from the community, will be requiring transportation to a surge facility (the Events Center), as the major hospitals have already been overwhelmed with injured cases.

Participating organizations include the American Red Cross, Vestal EMS, Harpur’s Ferry EMS, Binghamton University Police, Susquehanna Nursing Care and Rehabilitation Center, Broome County Health Department, Broome County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), Binghamton University Department of Social Work, United Health Services, nursing faculty and nursing students from the Decker School of Nursing.

Participants will utilize the Incident Command System (ICS) as an education tool.  ICS is a standardized, all hazard incident management system used throughout the United States.

Nurses and members of the community are invited to participate.
