    The Binghamton University Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society will hold its annual Law Conference and dinner at 6 p.m., Wednesday, September 24.  The event, which is open to the public, will be held in the Susquehanna Room of the University Union. 

    This years conference has a theme of “social responsibility” and will feature George Bundy Smith, a former associate judge of the New York Court of Appeals; Judge Laura Safer Espinoza, of drug court in Bronx Criminal Court; and Shareema Gadson Shaw, a University alumna, and now an assistant district attorney in Bronx District Attorney's Office.

    Smith, a partner at Chadbourne and Parke LLP in New York, served on the state’s highest court until his retirement in 2006. His judicial service began in 1975 and he also was a justice on the Supreme Court of New York. Smith worked to advance the cause of civil rights in the early 1960s as a Freedom Rider in Alabama.

    Also on September 24, the University will host a law fair and panel discussion for students. The fair will be held from 11:30 a.m.-2:45 p.m. in the Susquehanna Room. Representatives from 68 law schools will be in attendance. A panel discussion focusing on the law admissions process will follow at 3 p.m. in room 252 of the University Union.

    The Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society was founded in 1992 as a support group for minority students hoping to pursue a career in law.
