Binghamton University Energy Conservation Contest winner to be announced

Binghamton University President Lois B. DeFleur, members of NYPIRG and the Student Association, will gather to announce the winning community of the 2008 Energy Conservation Contest at 3:30 p.m. Friday, April 4, in the main lounge of O’Connor Hall in the Dickinson Community.

For six weeks, residential communities competed for a $20,000 prize by attempting to reduce energy consumption by the highest percentage.  Members of the winning community will be on hand to discuss some of the creative ways they were able to reduce energy consumption, as well as how they might spend the prize money.

Past contests have resulted in an annual equivalent savings of more than $88,000 and approximately 350,000 pounds of carbon dioxide not being released into the atmosphere. According to the University's utility manager, that amounted to about 40 pounds per student, per year.

The campus community is constantly searching for ways to lower its impact on the environment by working with students to establish innovative, creative opportunities to engage and educate the residential communities in reducing energy usage.
