Harpur Forum explores science & mathematics teacher education for the 21st century

Thomas O’Brien, associate professor of education in the School of Education and Human Development at Binghamton University, will discuss “Science & Mathematics Teacher Education for the 21st Century: Problems & Possibilities” at the Harpur Forum’s annual faculty spotlight luncheon, Wednesday, January 11, in the Mandela Room on the University campus. Lunch will begin at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin at noon.

O’Brien directs the Center of Science, Mathematics and Technology Education (CSMTE) at Binghamton University.  The mission of the CSMTE is to provide innovative approaches to preparing teachers of science, mathematics and technology in grades 6-12 with special focus on girls, students of color and students who face economic disadvantage.

Another part of the CSMTE mission is to conduct research on the effects of technology in teaching and learning.  “The ever-increasing interconnectivity of electronic databases via the World Wide Web coupled with the enhanced speed and memory capabilities of personal computers has made it possible for science teachers and their students to readily access a universe of scientific and instructional resources that is truly mind-boggling,” O’Brien said.

In addition, O’Brien has operated workshops nationwide on the teaching of science at all grade levels and has served as an office of the New York State Science Education Association.  He has worked with numerous summer teacher institutes, is recognized in virtually every school district across New York State and is known as “Mr. Science Educator” to many local teachers.

The Harpur Forum serves business, professional and community leaders by bringing nationally known authorities to speak at Forum functions throughout the year.
