In celebration of National Engineers Week, the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science and IBM will sponsor a day of free programs for budding engineers on Saturday, February 28. The programs, which are open to middle school, high school and college students, will run from 9:30 a.m to 4 p.m. in the Engineering Building.

Participants will be able to create Web pages, drive a simulator, steer a laser beam, explore robots at work, experience speech through engineering and see demonstrations of a solar-powered car.

The event will also feature sessions for parents interested in learning more about Internet safety and legal issues of Internet use.

Highlights of the program include two competitions: a spaghetti bridge building contest and a maglev (magnetic levitation) drag race tournament, which is new to the competition this year.

The spaghetti bridge building competition will feature teams competing in a timed head-to-head competition to build a bridge that can hold the most weight. The maglev drag race has teams or individuals design and construct a vehicle that utilizes magnetic levitation to compete in a drag race tournament. Kits for the maglev event must be reserved in advance.
