Binghamton University Professor Available to Discuss Use of DNA Analysis to Evaluate Thoroughbreds
Steven Tammariello, associate professor of biological sciences, is available to discuss his research on genetic testing on horses. He has founded a company called ThoroughGen, which offers a basic three-gene test for Thoroughbreds. It screens for one gene that is vital to energy production and two tied to muscle function. Energy production is linked to stamina, muscle twitch to speed. Facing a population of Thoroughbreds born each year that will never race, the question is raised as to what to do with these horses. Tammariello's goal is to decrease the number of substandard horses that are produced, and increase the chances of producing sound horses.
