Study Abroad
Why should you make study abroad a part of your undergraduate education? Maybe you want to travel and experience different cultures, or take your Spanish out of the classroom and into the streets. Perhaps you want to examine your major from another perspective or do field-work in another country. Whatever your reasons are for choosing to study abroad, the benefits — academic, personal and professional — are unavoidable!
- earn academic credit toward your degree program
- learn a new language or improve existing language skills
- gain a competitive edge in the job market or for graduate school
- develop intercultural knowledge and abilities
- gain a new perspective on your field of study
- explore cultural differences and find common values between cultures
- become a global citizen
- develop independence and self-reliance
Binghamton currently sponsors over 20 active study-abroad and exchange programs in a wide variety of locations and fields — and new programs are constantly being developed. Become an exchange student at an English-speaking University in Turkey, accompany Binghamton faculty to England, do biological fieldwork in Costa Rica or learn about Chinese business practices in Shanghai. In addition, Binghamton students have access to the more than 400 study-abroad programs sponsored by SUNY institutions.
A program within your major is possible and encouraged, but students are also free to explore options in other disciplines as well. Language study is popular, but not necessary for study abroad, and while many students study abroad during their junior year, you can study abroad any time from the summer after your sophomore year, to the summer after your senior year.
We encourage you to begin planning your study-abroad experience as early as possible — even in your freshman year. Whatever your goals for study abroad, there is a program right for you, and our office is here to help you through the process, from choosing a program to returning to Binghamton after your fabulous experience abroad.
If you’re looking for opportunities to study away, yet closer to home, check out the National Student Exchange for opportunities within the United States and Canada.
