Semester-in-London: Student Life

Students live in London neighborhoods, with four to six sharing a flat. Most students share a bedroom with one or two other students. The flats, located in historic housing in central London, are small, but fully furnished, with linens, blankets, and towels, well-equipped kitchens, television, telephone, central heating, and washer-dryers. Weekly cleaning is also included in the rental price. All flats are located in the Bloomsbury-Clerkenwell areas within a twenty minute walk of our classroom location. A staff person is on 24-hour call to deal with problems and serve as an emergency contact person. There is no internet access in the student flats, but students have 24-hour access to the computer labs at the FSU Study Centre. The Bloomsbury-Clerkenwell neighborhood is lively and beautiful. Students often eat lunch in Russell Square, just around the corner from the FSU Study Centre. Nearby attractions include the British Museum, shopping on Tottenham Court road, and Covent Garden. Students are within walking distance of several different Tube stops, and can easily reach, on foot, or by bus or Tube, all of central London.

Students who take the group flight will be met at the plane and taken to the flats by chartered bus. The on-site program coordinator provides student support and is available to assist with student questions and concerns. The program orientation during the students' first few days in London, is designed to help students acclimate themselves to London, their flats, and the neighborhood. In addition, students have access to the library, computer labs, and student lounge at the FSU Study Centre.

London is filled with an endless variety of attractions and events, and the amazing central location of the student flats puts the city at your doorstep. Students consistently report that they spent no time in their flats--there's just too much to see and do to waste any time inside!

The London Program also offers several program-organized trips to compliment students' independent explorations of London and nearby destinations. Program trips to the theater are an almost weekly occurence, and theatrical offerings range from Shakespeare to contemporary comedy. Day trips to locations like Stonehenge, Bath, and Warwick Castle occur during the semester on weekends. In addition, one or two overnight trips takes students further afield: past destinations include the Southwest coast and the Lake District in the UK, and Normandy, France. Program excursions are designed to enhance the program curriculum, and, in fact, trips to museums and sites in London are an everyday part of London program coursework: instead of just reading Mrs. Dalloway, follow her footsteps around London!
