STEVEN SCALET

Associate Professor of Philosophy and Economics, he is also Director of the Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Law. In 2004 Professor Scalet received the state-wide SUNY Chancellor Award for Excellence in Teaching and in 2007 the Binghamton University Council/Foundation Award for Excellence in Service.

His areas of research and teaching include Social and Political
Philosophy, Applied Ethics, and  American philosophy. 

Professor Scalet's publications include, "Legitimacy, Confrontation Respect, and the Bind of Freestanding Liberalism" Journal of Social Philosophy, forthcoming,  2010;  "CSR Rating Agencies:  what is their Global Impact?" Journal of Business Ethics, forthcoming, 2010; "Famine, Poverty, and Property Rights" with David Schmidtz in Contemporary Philosophy in Focus, ed. Christopher W. (Charles Scribner's Sons, 2005);  "Fitting the People they are Meant to Serve: Reasonableness in the American Legal System" (Law and Philosophy, 2003). and "Liberalism, Skepticism, and Neutrality:  Making Do Without Doubt." Journal of Value Inquiry 2000.   Professor Scalet  is also co-editor with Chris Griffin of the American Philosophical Association's Newsletter in Philosophy and Law, and co-editor with John Arthur of the popular introductory moral and political philosophy textbook Morality and Moral Controversies, Eighth Edition (Prentice Hall 2009).  He also speaks frequently to groups around New York State on topics of corporate social responsibility and living in a democracy as a Speaker for the New York Council for the Humanities. Professor Scalet received his Ph.D. in philosophy and M.A. in economics from the University of Arizona. 
Professor Scalet is currently working on a book that aims to integrate claims about ethics and justice with discussions of markets and economics -- discussions that follow from a decade of teaching a popular course at Binghamton University called "Markets, Ethics, and Law,"
