The Martin (Mike) Dillon Award

The Martin (Mike) Dillon Award was established to honor the memory of Martin (Mike) Dillon (1938-2005). Dillon, who received his B.A. from the University of Virginia in 1960, his M.A. from U.C. Berkeley in 1964, a MPhil in 1968 and a PhD in 1970 from Yale, was a Distinguished Teaching Professor of Philosophy at Binghamton University where he taught from 1968. He specialized in Continental Philosophy and Phenomenology and Existential Philosophy. Dedicated to teaching, he was also a productive scholar His authored books include Merleau-Ponty's Ontology, (Bloomington: Indiana University, 1988, second edition 1998) Semiological Reductionism: a Critique of the Deconstructionist Movement in Postmodern Thought, (Albany: SUNY, 1995) and Beyond Romance, (Albany: SUNY, 2001). He also edited Merleau-Ponty Vivant, (Albany: SUNY, 1991) and Écart & Difference: Merleau-Ponty and Derrida on Seeing and Writing, (Amherst, NY: Prometheus Books, 1996). Dillon was a founding member of The Merleau-Ponty Circle.

The Martin (Mike) Dillon Award is given yearly to senior Philosophy majors in recognition of their excellence and promise.
