CENTRAL RECEIVING/WAREHOUSE
Physical Facilities Department operates Binghamton University’s Central Receiving dock. It is located behind, or south of the Physical Facilities building on the western edge of campus.
Central Receiving/Warehouse
Central Receiving is a combination warehouse, receiving and delivery service. Each year thousands of deliveries large and small arrive at Central Receiving. With less than 7,000 square feet, seventy percent of which is used to store material for campus maintenance, renovation and construction, the area for staging incoming-outgoing packages is quite limited. And currently, with fewer personnel to staff the operation and an ever increasing volume of traffic, it is more important than ever to know how to make the best use of the services Central Receiving offers.
1. Anything that requires special handling, such as large pieces of scientific equipment or bulk furniture, or items that you need within 24 hours, are best directed to their final destination on campus, not Central Receiving. Please be sure to give the sender/supplier a purchase order number, contact name & phone number, building name, floor and room number and ask them to be sure to include this information on their labeling. Also include an alternate person and their contact information in case you are unavailable when it arrives.
2. If you do direct an order to Central Receiving ask the sender/supplier to include the same contact information: purchase order number, contact name & phone number, building name, floor and room number. If the order is large in physical size or quantity please contact Central Receiving @ X 7-4004 so we can plan for its arrival. Also include an alternate person and their contact information in case you are unavailable when it arrives.
3. Only order an amount of supplies/equipment that you have space to use or store in your area. Many vendors will do incremental deliveries if asked. Physical Facilities successfully uses this methodology for large quantities of materials, toilet paper being one of the largest.
4. Small packages received at Central Receiving are typically delivered to you in less than 3 business days so it is not necessary to contact Central Receiving for a normal delivery. When a package is processed through Central Receiving it is re-labeled for delivery and notification via email is sent to you. For overdue packages, please verify with the vendor it was actually shipped and obtain a shipper’s tracking number before you contact Central Receiving @ 7-4004.
5. Large packages are delivered on a case by case basis through the Expediting group. When you receive the email notification that a package has arrived, and you know it to be a large package, contact Central Receiving @ 7-4004. You will be referred to the appropriate staff to arrange for delivery. Items too large or too heavy for Expediting to handle may necessitate contracting with a moving vendor.
