Progress on the East Gym renovation is revealing the new, brighter spaces that will be available when the facility re-opens in January, 2012. This can be seen in the photos below which were taken in August. Recent construction activity includes:

With phase 1-3 complete, the new Newing Community and Chenango Champlain Collegiate Center, construction activity at the East Campus Housing site is now focused on phase 4. Phase 4 is construction of the four new residential halls for the Dickinson Community. The location of the new buildings can be seen on this site plan.
Over the summer, the contractor removed old utilities in the work area of the new Dickinson buildings and began demolishing the old Newing buildings. Delaware Hall was the first to go. Demolition on Chenango is also complete and Endicott Hall will be the last building cleared from the site.
The large piping now stored on site is is for the utility work the contractor will soon have underway and also for of the new storm water management system. There will be further changes to the intersection of East Access Road and East Drive this fall. Excavation will be underway on the construction site in the coming months and the campus will begin to see steel go up or the new Dickinson buildings early next year. The buildings will be complete for the fall, 2013 semester.
Over summer 2011, about 66% of the concourse area of the Lecture Hall underwent renovation along with improvements to Lecture Halls 1 and 2. Restrooms in the basement below this area were also renovated. Work began with asbestos abatement immediately after Commencement. The contractor had a tight time frame to complete a lot of work. New windows, ceilings, floors, walls and mechanical systems were included in the project.
The four quadrants of the Lecture Hall will embrace the different seasons using environmentally friendly materials such as recycled resin panels, low VOC paint and energy efficient lighting and windows.
Most of the work will be complete for the fall semester. New display cases and bulletin boards will arrive and be installed in September.
The remaining portion of the concourse in the north side of the building will be renovated next summer during phase 2.
Renovation and construction of an addition to the Chenango Room is underway. Asbestos abatement has taken place and the interior has been gutted and the glass atrium torn down Upcoming construction will involve setting steel for the new addition along with re-construction of interior areas. The renovation/addition is scheduled for completion for the fall 2012 semester. Work includes complete renovation of the dining area with serving stations and construction of an Einstein's Bagel restaurant addition. The Chenango room kitchen will be relocated and the private conference dining areas will be relocated and renovated. A glass and insulated panel wall will be constructed along the east wall of the Chenango Room. New heating and air conditioning systems are also part of the project.
Phase 2 of the Central Campus Quad project will continue through the fall. The contractor has installed the foundation for the new water fountain. Underground utility work is continuing. The sub-base for some of the walkways have been constructed. Improvements are being made to Science I building entrances. Phase 2 involves reconstructing the west side of the quad. Phase 1 of the project, which involved removing the old fountain along with some utility re-locations, was completed in June. The Central Campus Quad project renovates the outdoor area bounded by the Library Tower, Science I, Fine Arts and the Anderson Center. The overall project schedule runs from May, 2011 to November, 2012. Work includes updating walks, new lighting, plantings and seating. The existing fountain will be replaced with an infinity fountain. Building entrances off the Quad will be updated so that they are ADA compliant. In all, 165,000 square feet of open space will be renovated. The improvements will be similar to the ones made to the Lois B. DeFleur Walkway. Access to Science I and other buildings bordering the project site will be maintained. Signs will be used to assist pedestrians around the work. The project is taking place in phases.
The contractor will demobilize in November, 2011. The area around the infinity fountain will remain fenced. Diagonal pedestrian access across the quad will be provided during this period.
A glass enclosed addition is being constructed in the Library Courtyard. The 750 square foot addition will connect to Jazzman's Cafe in the Library Tower and allow for seating of 45 people. Work now underway includes installing footings for the steel that will support the addition. Steel is expected to go up around Labor Day. Tree removal has taken place in the courtyard. New landscaping is also part of the project. The project will be complete in late fall, 2011.
Upgrades will be made to elevators in several buildings on campus. Elevators in the following buildings are slated for work: Administration Building, Fine Arts, Science I, Science II, Library, Old University Union, Lecture Hall, West Gym, Tuscarora Office Building, Rockefeller Center and Central Heating Plant.
The first three elevators scheduled for work are in the Library Tower, Science I and Science II. Work on these elevators will begin Thursday, May 26 and will be complete in August 2011. Below are floor plans with the locations of these elevators shaded in green. Signs will be posted to direct traffic to other elevators.
The sidewalk between the Library and Engineering Buildings has been re-opened and pedestrian and vehicular traffic patterns in that area are back to normal. The contractor must still install a railing along the sidewalk, but I do not have a schedule for that work at this time. The walk to the Anderson Center from lot E is still under construction and we are awaiting schedule information about that portion of the project. Work near parking lot M1/Susquehanna Community will continue for approximately another two weeks. The contractor has taken down the fence around the fire pit for opening day activities. Work in the Hinman Quad is wrapping up this week with along repair of grass and paved areas that were disturbed.
This project has entailed replacing 3200 lineal feet of the water line. The campus has experienced breaks in this water line in recent years necessitating substantial replacement. The work areas of this project appear on the Construction Map. Along with the work in outdoor areas, there will be work mainly in the mechanical areas of several buildings. The interior work involves installing new valves and other plumbing related equipment. Buildings affected are Science I, Science II, Science III, Anderson Center, Fine Arts, Engineering Building,Physical Facilities and Lecture Hall. Work is expected to be complete by early October, 2011.
This project focuses primarily on replacing the heating, ventilation and air conditioning system serving Tuscarora Office Building. The existing equipment is nearing the end of its design life. The project will begin in fall 2011 and be complete in about six months. Staff with offices in the building have been temporarily re-located to O'Connor Hall in the Dickinson Community. The project involves asbestos abatement of mechanical rooms, ceilings and restrooms. Old HVAC equipment will be removed and replaced. New building controls and electrical distribution are part of the project. Work also includes new lighting, ceilings, carpeting, restroom finishes and paint. A unisex ADA restroom will be constructed.
HVAC work is underway in the north wing of the Fine Arts Building so that air conditioning is available to classrooms and offices in the area. In all, 16 classrooms and 30 office spaces on the first, second and third floors of the spaces on the north side of the Memorial Courtyard will be affected. The work will take place one floor at a time. Most work is expected to be complete by the fall, 2011 semester. Ceilings will also be replaced. More detailed schedule information will be shared once it is available. The shaded areas in the floor plans below show the work areas.
Additional parking spaces are being constructed near the Library. Ten spaces will be added on the east side of the library adjacent to the access road to the loading dock. Another eleven space will be built on the west side of the Library in the existing permit parking area. This project began in late July and will be complete in early September.
Windows overlooking the Memorial Courtyard will be repaired and the frames painted this summer. New plantings from donors will also be added to the Courtyard.
The exterior steel stairs in the Susquehanna Community will be replaced this summer.
Crews will be repairing exterior bricks on buildings in College-in-the-Woods.
Crews have completed repairs of deteriorated portions of the walkway leading to the Academic Complex.
