Our Pre-Law Advising Program is located within Harpur Academic Advising in AB-G18. Pre-law advisers and staff provide guidance on the law school admission process and legal careers. Informational meetings are conducted each semester. Binghamton's annual Law Day attracts over 85 law schools and 600 students.
First, students are encouraged to subscribe to the pre-law listserv, Prelaw-b, to receive communications from the pre-law advisers. Subscribe here to receive e-mail announcements of pre-law events, deadlines, opportunities and issues.
Second, all students interested in a legal career should meet with a pre-law adviser. In the freshman or sophomore year, stop by the office during pre-law walk-in hours. Upperclassmen can make an appointment to discuss choice of major(s), career interests, summer plans and other questions about law school and legal careers. The Career Development Center also has resources about law and law-related careers.
Third, in the junior and senior years, attend pre-law meetings to learn more about the law school admissions process. Check with the pre-law adviser about pre-law scholarship opportunities for juniors and seniors. Make an appointment with the pre-law adviser in the fall of your senior year to go over your list of law schools, submit your senior pre-law questionnaire, submit dean's letter forms and discuss other questions about the admission process.
Students planning to attend law school should take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) in June of their junior year or no later than September/October of their senior year, if they plan to attend law school directly after college. The LSAT is a challenging, half-day examination offered four times each year, composed of five 35-minute multiple choice sections and one 35-minute writing sample. The Pre-Law Office has LSAT and LSDAS (Law School Data Assembly Service) information, sample tests and test preparation materials. Pre-law advisers are available to help Binghamton students and alumni with the law school application process.
Pre-Law Advising offers materials and services to help all students interested in a legal career. Students can browse in the Pre-Law Library during regular office hours, and the pre-law adviser is available for scheduled appointments and walk-in hours. Announcements of pre-law meetings and programs are posted in Harpur Advising, in other locations and in University media. The Career Development Center (CDC) also has resources about law and law-related careers. The Pre-Law Office and the Career Development Center co-sponsor the annual Law Day each fall, including a Law Fair attended by over 85 law schools and including a panel discussion.
Students are encouraged to participate in various law-related activities and organizations:
* Internships listed through the Career Development Center
* Pre-law student organizations, such as the Phi Alpha Delta Pre-Law Fraternity, Mock Trial Club and Thurgood Marshall Pre-Law Society, Binghamton Speech and Debate
* University Judicial Board, which enforces the University Rules of Conduct.
* Leadership roles in campus and community organizations
