Clinical Psychology Faculty

Overview

Aligning with the philosophy of the Department of Psychology, we deliberately maintain a policy of keeping our faculty as cohesive as possible – in educational philosophies, in values regarding the importance of scientific training and in theoretical orientation. This means that we are not a particularly eclectic group and our empirical orientation results in all clinical faculty identifying with a behavioral and cognitive perspective, broadly defined.

Our program is, therefore, especially well-known in behavior therapy circles, and many of our students and faculty publish research and clinical innovation in behavioral journals and attend professional conferences such as those organized by the Association for the Advancement of Behavior Therapy and the Association of Behavioral Analysis. However, our position is in no way doctrinaire or exclusionary. We encourage critical thought and the pursuit of new knowledge. Also, many of our faculty have related affiliations with other professional groups and scientific associations, such as the Society of Behavioral Medicine, Society for Neurosciences and Division 12, Section 3 (Society for the Science of Clinical Psychology) of the American Psychological Association.

There are 13 faculty members primarily associated with the Clinical Training Program, though faculty from other areas regularly participate in student training and research mentoring. Our areas of interest and backgrounds are described on webpages you may access by selecting the name of the faculty member you are interested in from the list below. All our full-time faculty are active researchers and scholars as well as skilled clinicians. We try, therefore, to be role models of the kinds of product we seek in our students. For example, all program faculty are actively engaged in some aspects of clinical work by virtue of applied research, program development, treatment evaluation, consulting and supervision.

As you review our professional interests, remember that these change in accordance with research findings, social need and the curiosity of faculty and students. We generally seek some level of match between the interests of our faculty and student applicants, but we recognize that these interests can, and should, develop over time. Rather than emphasizing the particular research projects of a current year, applicants might do well to think about the broader orientations and values of the faculty research. The clinical faculty work closely together as a group,making all program decisions on a consensual basis. Student input is solicited both informally and through regular meetings between the director of clinical training and a committee of elected student representatives from each class. Faculty advisors have a great deal of responsibility for individual students. At the same time, students are members of a program, and are therefore our collective responsibility. The director of clinical training is responsible for implementing program policies, but the design of such policies, the evaluation of students and the vision for the training program are all collaboratively based.
