S3IP, in collaboration with Broome-Tioga BOCES and the New York State Education Department, offers a two-week summer opportunity for academically talented and motivated 7th grade students in the Southern Tier. The Go Green Institute provides these high achieving students with advanced training in science, math, engineering, and technology to enhance their understanding of, and interest in, these technical disciplines. The Institute is an intensive, hands-on learning experience focused on creating a sustainable, “green” living environment. Students participate in small, supportive group learning environments on the BU campus with a faculty-to-student ratio of approximately 1 to 5.
Through engaging activities, students deepen their understanding of some of the most important science concepts and skills relating to our living environment. Students receive classroom instruction, conduct hands-on experiments, and engage in a research project focusing on current environmental challenges to our society. The Institute also includes the opportunity to participate in field trips and meet with invited experts working in government, industry, and academia on these problems. Student teams work collaboratively with BU faculty and middle school teachers to explore and propose solutions to these environmental challenges. Students share what they have learned at an Institute-sponsored reception and poster session that is open to parents, school administrators, and the local community during the awards ceremony at the conclusion of the Institute.
