2013 S3IP Seminar Series
As a part of the 2013 S3IP Seminar Series, The Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center (S3IP) welcomed Dr. Alan Rae, Executive Director of Alfred Technology Resources Inc.; CEO of NanoMaterials Innovation Center LLC; and President of ReNew Rare Earth Inc., on Friday, April 19th. Dr. Rae’s lecture, Nano Electronics Commercialization – Challenges, Opportunities and Examples, provided the audience with an overview of the exciting field of nanotechnology and future opportunities in this area. This seminar was also offered as one of the programs during Binghamton University’s 2013 Research Days.

Dr. Nicholas Schiff's Seminar
The Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center (S3IP) in conjunction with the Psychology Department hosted Dr. Nicholas Schiff, Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at Weill Cornell Medical College, as part of the S3IP 2013 Seminar Series on March 8. Dr. Schiff is a renowned physician-scientist who focuses his study on the area of neurological disorders of consciousness. During his visit, Dr. Schiff offered a seminar on "Recovery of consciousness after severe brain injuries" to an audience of faculty, staff and students from across campus. The audience was clearly engaged as Dr. Schiff addressed the myths and truths about consciousness; and explored where future research is headed based on currentfindings. Dr. Schiff also met with a group of undergraduate students and individually with faculty.
2013 BU day at the Mall
The Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center participated in Binghamton University's fourth-annual 'BU Day at the Mall.' This year, six S3IP graduate student volunteers informed the public on the Center's growing research program in solar energy. An interactive display was on hand to demonstrate how solar cells convert light energy into electricity. The Center also highlighted the research it conducts in the area of electronics packaging.
Occasions such as BU Day at the Mall provide the opportunity to communicate the vision and mission of the Center to the community.
2012 Tech Awards
The New York State Center of Excellence in Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging (S3IP) at Binghamton University and the Southern Tier Opportunity Coalition (STOC) honored five individuals Wednesday for their efforts in promoting economic development in the Southern Tier.
William Murphy, retired senior engineer and fellow at Lockheed Martin, was recognized as Technology Innovation Leader of the Year for his efforts in shaping the technology community through leadership in electronics packaging.
Saurabh Shrivastava, senior lead thermal mechanical engineer at Panduit Corp., was recognized as Technology Innovation Mentor/Educator of the Year for his significant impact on the Watson School, Binghamton University and the technology community at large.
Eugene Krentsel, assistant vice president, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Partnerships at Binghamton University, was recognized as Technology Innovation Entrepreneur of the Year for his contributions to the growth of dynamic, high technology business in upstate New York.
William Berical, retired vice president for platform solutions at BAE Systems, and Charles Becker, chief scientist, Electrical Technologies and Systems, General Electric, received the STOC/S3IP Lifetime Achievement in Technology Innovation Award.
The awards were announced at the S3IP Annual Dinner on November 7. The dinner featured remarks by Bahgat Sammakia, vice president for research at Binghamton University and S3IP director. David Gdovin, vice president of STOC, joined him in presenting the technology innovation awards.

S3IP Laboratory Opening Ceremony
S3IP is pleased to announce the openings of two laboratories: the CASP solar lab and the IEEC Reliability and Failure Analysis Laboratory on May 3, 2012. The ceremony celebrated the opening of the Center for Autonomous Solar Power's Solar Laboratory and the co-location of the Integrated Electronics Engineering Center's (IEEC) Reliability and Failure Analysis Laboratory. Both laboratories are housed in the Biotechnology Building at the ITC. This consolidation of resources will enable the Center of Excellence to grow its research and development efforts on new electronic technologies that impact New York State's economy.
Southern Tier Regional Showcase
The State University of New York Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, right speaks with James Switzer, Jr. right about the catheter at the SUNY Showcase held on March 14, 2012. The showcase was hosted by Binghamton in the Mandela Room at the University Union and included displays of programs and innovations from Binghamton, Broome Community College, Cornell, Corning Community College, Delhi and Empire State College.
Binghamton University Day at the Oakdale Mall 2012
The Small Scale Systems Integration & Packaging Center participated in the third annual Binghamton University Day at the Oakdale Mall on February 25, 2012. This event was an opportunity to showcase the Center’s research programs.
The National Science Foundation has designated the Center for Energy-Efficient Electronic Systems as a national Industry/University Cooperative Research Center.

CIC2020 visits S3IP to learn more about academic-industrial collaboration. Students from the Spring 2011 Catalyst for Intellectual Capital gathered at the Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center to learn about research initiatives and the Center's collaborations with industry.
Marcene Sonneborn will be presenting at the SBIR/STTR Workshop on Wednesday, May 11, 2011 in Old Union Hall from 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Roger Schmidt, IBM will be presenting a seminar on "Thermal Management Applied to Data Centers with Focus on Energy Efficiency". The seminar will be from 4- 5 p.m. in UUW-325.

Binghamton University today launched construction of its New York State Center of Excellence in Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging (S3IP) building in a ceremony attended by elected officials, local leaders and University representatives.
The facility will connect with the Biotechnology and the Engineering and Science buildings, which are part of the University’s Innovative Technologies Complex (ITC).
Bahgat Sammakia
Binghamton University faculty member Bahgat Sammakia received a prestigious award June 3 in recognition of his pioneering research.Sammakia was selected to receive the 2010 ITherm Achievement Award in honor of his contributions to electronics, thermal and thermomechanical research, as well as his service to the electronics thermal management community.
CIC2020 Visits S3IP to learn more about academic-industrial collaboration - April 9, 2010
Seventeen students from the Spring 2010 Catalysts for Intellectual Capital 2020 (CIC) class gathered Friday, April 9 at the Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging Center (S3IP) to hear about S³IP research and economic development, and to learn about what the Center means to the Binghamton community and college students.
CIC 2020, Catalyst for Intellectual Capital 2020, is a Binghamton University class and student organization that aims to bridge the gap between BU students and the community. To educate students about the Greater Binghamton region and to encourage students to remain in the area after graduation, the group visits various campus organizations, such as S3IP, and companies in the community to learn more from their leadership, about their programs and initiatives.
The CIC 2020 students come from various academic backgrounds, including bioengineering, English and political science. “Our goal is to retain young talent in the area after graduation to stay in the community and help it improve,” said Jodi Epstein, CIC2020 executive director and a senior majoring in human development. “I have been working with the center for five years because it’s achieving what we are trying to do.”
The agenda consisted of a brief introduction to S3IP by Director, Bahgat Sammakia, where the students discussed the Center’s role in the region, state and nation. This meeting was followed by a visit to Endicott Interconnect Technologies (EI) in Endicott, N.Y., where the group met with President Jay McNamara. While at EI, the group toured of the Center for Advanced Microelectronics Manufacturing (CAMM), a Binghamton University and EI collaboration, The CAMM, a manufacturing laboratory focused on developing new flexible electronic technologies, serves as an example of academia working in collaboration with industry.

S3IP Participates in High Tech Innovation Showcase on Capitol Hill - August 4, 2010
Binghamton University’s New York State Center of Excellence in Small Scale Systems Integration and Packaging (S3IP) participated in U.S. Senator Kirsten E. Gillibrand’s High Tech Innovation Showcase, in Russell Senate Building on August 4, 2010. The showcase highlighted the exciting ways in which US high tech companies and research institutions are driving economic growth and advancing technologies to address some of the most important national issues such as health care, energy and education. The event brought together many of the nation’s premier innovators and high-tech leaders from the private sector, academia and the government to discuss the critical importance of innovation to job creation, quality of life and our continued global competitiveness.
The audience at the showcase included elected officials from Capitol Hill and their staff from the individual offices and relevant committees, staff from the Obama Administration, other DC policymakers and other interested parties from New York and across the country. S3IP, which develops new electronic applications to enhance the way people interact with their surrounding, showcased new energy efficient electronic systems.
