To hold a teaching position in New York, you must be certified by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) as having met the education, examination and experience requirements necessary to teach a particular subject at the prescribed grade level. Certification ensures that all teachers in New York are being held to a high standard; that they have been adequately prepared to address new state learning standards, are competent and have had the proper experience required for the position. Binghamton University’s School of Education programs are registered with NYSED and are designed to give students the coursework and field experiences needed to meet these requirements.
Along with successful completion of a state-registered teacher-education program, you must also meet specific requirements to become a New York state-licensed teacher. These include passing the New York State Teacher Certification Examination, completing certification workshops on child abuse and school violence and submitting fingerprints. The New York State Education Department TEACH system is used to process teacher certification applications. Keep in mind that while Binghamton University confers teacher-education degrees, only the New York State Education Department can grant teaching licenses.
The demand for teachers in New York state varies by subject and geographical location, although there is a consistent need for special education, math, science and foreign language teachers. The “2008 Progress Report on Teacher Supply and Demand” (372kb .pdf) developed by the NYSED Office of Higher Education is helpful.
