Services For Students With Disabilities Staff

Barbara Jean Fairbairn - Director

Ms. Jean Fairbairn is responsible for the overall direction of the office in the fulfillment of its mission. She provides direct support to students through counseling, advising, consultation, advocacy and the coordination of appropriate university accommodations, and works with staff throughout the university to ensure effective disability access and enhance educational opportunities. Ms. Fairbairn has been director of Binghamton University's Services for Students with Disabilities since April 1977. She earned her Master of Science degree in Rehabilitation Counseling, from West Virginia University, and is a long-standing member of the international Association on Higher Education and Disability (AHEAD). She was the first president of the State University of New York's SUNY Disability Services Council" and continues to be dynamically involved in its professional development and collaboration activities. She and the Director of Affirmative Action monitor university compliance with Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act and the 1990 Americans with Disabilities Act. bjfairba@binghamton.edu 

 

Andrea Snyder - Learning Disabilities Specialist

Andrea Snyder joined the Services for Students with Disabilities office in August 2008.  She reviews disability documentation to determine and authorize appropriate accommodations for students with cognitively-based disabilities, works directly with students to coordinate academic accommodations, and provides tutorials on homework organization, study skills techniques, test taking strategies, and the effective use of adaptive computer technologies.  Andrea received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Villanova University and Master of Science in Education from the University of Pennsylvania.  She has state certifications as both a School Psychologist and School Counselor.  Her professional experience includes positions as an elementary school counselor, secondary school psychologist, and adjunct professor.  A member of several professional organizations including the National Association of School Psychologists and the Association on Higher Education and Disability, Andrea’s approach in support of students with disabilities focuses on helping students develop strategies and self-management skills to enhance independent living and learning at Binghamton University and beyond. asnyder@binghamton.edu

 

 

Carol Hall - Assistant Director

Ms. Carol Hall is responsible for the management of all Academic Support Services provided through SSD. She coordinates the recruitment, appointment, and payroll of related personnel and works with student consumers in the supervision of those hired to assist them. She works along side the Director and Learning Disabilities Specialist in assisting students to problem-solve and in responding to their needs for assistance or advocacy. Her other responsibilities include budget, account and data management, the coordination of office assessment activities, and professional involvement in program development and strategic planning. Carol received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Binghamton University in 1977. She was awarded the University Service Recognition Award for 30 years of dedicated service on March 3, 2005.  chall@binghamton.edu

 

Marlene S. Buza - General Receptionist and Secretary
Marlene S. Buza photo

Marlene S. Buza joined Services for Students with Disabilities In March of 2003 as General Receptionist and Secretary. Her responsibilities include managing administrative tasks for the staff, coordinating meeting logistics and providing assistance to the students, staff and visitors.

Prior to joining Services for Students with Disabilities, Marlene worked for the Binghamton University Office of Financial Aid and Employment, Semiconductor Industry Suppliers Association, IBM Corporation, ABB Power Generation, and the U.S. State Department.
