Information for students affected by the flood

The University asks that all students affected by the flood take this survey for us to better help you and move you in the right direction: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/25JCM3W.

Any students who have additional questions beyond the information offered on this page should contact the Dean of Students Office at 607-777-2804, dos@binghamton.edu or visit the office in UUW-205.

Academics

The recent flooding has had a direct and dramatic impact on many Binghamton University students and faculty. Many have suffered catastrophic losses and have sought emergency shelter. Many of these students are anxious about their ability to attend classes and complete assignments as they cope with the loss of their residence and possessions. Given the wide-ranging impact of the flooding, Interim Provost Jean-Pierre Mileur has asked faculty to be as flexible as possible in dealing with students who have been affected and to be considerate of students as they attempt to recover and get caught up in their courses.

In addition, the following offices can be contacted for information and services as noted:

Housing

Binghamton University has limited temporary housing in Johnson Hall available to off-campus students who have been displaced due to flooding. Students interested in temporary housing should visit the Residential Life office weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Residential Life office is located in room 105 of O'Connor Hall and can be reached at 607-777-2321, reslife@binghamton.edu or http://reslife.binghamton.edu.

Off-campus housing assistance

The University's Off Campus College office offers regular legal clinics for off-campus students who wish to meet with an attorney to discuss their legal rights, lease arrangements and other issues surrounding renting. The office held a clinic and open forum on Wednesday, Sept. 14, for students with questions about their off-campus housing issues. For those who were unable to attend either the clinic or the forum, Office Campus College can be reached at 607-777-2768, occ@binghamton.edu or UUW-204.

Financial Aid

Counselors are available to help students identify potential resources as needed and may also be able to re-evaluate their eligibility for additional loan and grant eligibility. The Financial Aid and Student Records office is located in the Student Wing, room 119, and can be reached at 607-777-2428, finaid@binghamton.edu or http://www.binghamton.edu/financial-aid/

Meal cards

Sodexo Campus Services will provide limited-fund meal cards to students who elect to live in temporary housing in Johnson Hall and who have residential life approval. The cards will be provided by Residential Life staff when students register for the Johnson Hall housing.

Books

Displaced students will be provided Barnes & Noble vouchers by the Dean of Students office to purchase books at the University Bookstore. Students must provide their class schedule and authorization from the Dean of Students office when they present the vouchers at the bookstore.

Counseling

The University Counseling Center provides comprehensive preventive and clinical services to Binghamton University's undergraduate and graduate student community. In times of crisis, such as the current flooding that has displaced many Binghamton University students from their homes and affected many local families, victims may experience great emotional distress.  Students affected by the flooding and in need of support are encouraged to contact the Counseling Center at 607-777-2772 or stop by the center, located in Room 1202, Library North, Glenn G. Bartle Library. Evening and weekend emergencies should call 911 from a campus telephone or 607-777-2393 to reach the University Police.

Health

Victims and workers in flood-related emergencies often sustain wounds that are contaminated with soil. Tetanus bacteria is in the soil worldwide. This bacteria can cause muscular tetany (lockjaw), which can be fatal.

The Decker Student Health Services Center reminds students that tetanus prophylaxis (prevention via tetanus vaccinations) should always be considered as part of wound care. After the initial series of tetanus vaccinations, adults continue to need boosters every 10 years even in the absence of any wounds. If, however, there is a contaminated wound, a booster is given when more than five years have passed since the last vaccination. Students are encouraged to consider their immunization status and check with the Health Service if they have any questions.

Study Carrels and Study Areas

Locked Library study carrels are available to graduate students. Information on how the carrels are assigned and the application form is available on the Locked Study Carrels page.

In addition, there are individual tables, carrels and group study spaces available in the Bartle and Science libraries.
