Student Support Services Math Advisor
Half-Time (20 Hours) – Full Year Position
Purpose of Position
The SSS Math Advisor provides fundamental math and other academic support to participants in the SSS Program.
Organizational Relationships
The Math Advisor is under general supervision of the Director of TRiO Programs. Student Support Services is a component of Student Affairs.
Duties and Responsibilities
Academic Year
1.
Tutoring/Math Services
- Math tutoring to project participants.
- Advice regarding selection of math courses.
- Study Skills and Test Taking Strategies in math related courses.
- Provide Supplemental Instruction, as needed, for students in classes requiring, or those who would benefit from SI.
- Serve as the liaison with the Mathematics Department and Watson School of Engineering.

Academic Advisement
- Meet with assigned SSS students as necessary.
- Consult with the TRIO Director on a regular basis regarding student advising.
3.
Student Record Maintenance/Report Generation
- Maintain accurate and detailed student records and other data specified by the program Director and the grant regulations. Will require the use of database software and general report writing.
Summer Program
1.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Assist in the interviewing and selection of the summer teaching staff.
- Assist in the development and delivery of staff orientation.
- Aid in the evaluation of summer instructional staff.
2.
Instructional/Teaching Responsibilities
- Teach 2 or more Math classes during the SSS Summer Program.
- Offer office hours to SSS Summer Program Participants.
- Provide tutoring hours, as needed during the summer program.
Other Duties
1. Teamwork/Programming - Assist Director as necessary to develop appropriate programming for the Student Support Services program. Work as team member to foster a climate conducive to program success.
2. Committees — May be a member of University and external committees.
3. Speaking Engagements — May represent Student Support Services at various events and meetings.
4. Other Duties - as assigned that may enhance professional effectiveness yet not be primary to this position.
Required Education/Experience/Knowledge
- Bachelor’s degree in Math or Science required, Master’s degree preferred.
- Minimum two years tutoring and/or teaching experience at the college level with students from diverse backgrounds.
- Must be proficient in the use of computer software and hardware.

Responsibility:
A. Supervisory Controls
Director provides minimal supervision once individual establishes competence. Although the Director establishes most objectives, priorities, and deadlines, the individual will be independent in most primary responsibilities. Special events or less routine projects will require clarification and supervision by the Director.
B. Complexity
The Student Support Services Program is governed by both the federal Department of Education and the University. The position includes responsibility for ensuring participants meet grant requirements and that data for mandatory reports is accurate and timely. The tasks of this position are varied and continually expand as new Program activities are established.
