NYSUNY 2020 Update
The NYSUNY 2020 Challenge Grant program, announced earlier this week by New York Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and SUNY Chancellor Nancy L. Zimpher, will give Binghamton University and the other three SUNY University Centers an opportunity to apply for $140 million in state capital funds ($35 million per campus) to strengthen academic programs and reinvigorate the state economy.
Each campus must submit detailed, long-term economic and academic plans. Binghamton is already revising its existing strategic plan to meet the NYSUNY 2020 requirements. The plan will include proposals for new construction, new research facility development, continuation of critical maintenance efforts and continued growth and development of partnerships with local firms.
Plans will be reviewed by Zimpher and recommended to the Empire State Development Corporation (ESDC) for final approval.
"NYSUNY 2020 brings our economic development goals together with the world-class SUNY system in a way that boosts higher learning and creates good paying jobs all over New York," Cuomo said. "We need to put New Yorkers back to work, and this new partnership with SUNY will be a major part of the reinvention of New York."
The first round of approvals will be made by the end of this year.
