Our Vision

Think Green. Think Global. Think Binghamton:

Our plan to leverage Binghamton University’s academic excellence, global awareness and green initiatives to further benefit the region and New York State.

Public higher education has a unique mission and responsibility. SUNY ensures that New Yorkers have access to high-quality, affordable education, which helps keep the state’s best and brightest in New York. Right now, however, SUNY has too little revenue, too little investment and far too much regulation. If we fail to remedy these problems, we risk crippling our system of public higher education and miss an opportunity to help set the pace for developments in sustainability, engineering, health care and business. New York, like the country as a whole, must seize this moment and find a way to position itself to succeed on a global stage that looks like nothing we could ever have imagined. We need more engineers, scientists and nurses. We need sustained — and sustainable — economic growth.

Binghamton University is well positioned to help the state succeed in the knowledge-based global economy of the future. The University has long been a leader in internationalism and sustainability. As “the premier public university in the Northeast” and a leading university in the SUNY system, Binghamton has proven its effectiveness in providing access to a quality education, generating groundbreaking research and scholarship and contributing substantially to the economic development of the region and the state. We are particularly proud of our track record of smart, sustainable growth, our development of cutting-edge “green” technologies, and our long history of training students to succeed in the global economy. We have been recognized as one of the top 18 environmentally friendly campuses in the nation and have won every major award given in the United States for comprehensive internationalization in higher education.

Think Green. Think Global. Think Binghamton calls for increased enrollment of 5,000 undergraduate and graduate students, hiring 1,800 additional faculty and staff, construction of 12 new campus buildings, the addition of new partnerships and technology transfer programs between the University and businesses, and increased support for local start-up firms.

Similar investments in higher education have had enormous payoffs in other areas, including Silicon Valley in California and the Research Triangle in North Carolina. Investment in Pittsburgh’s universities helped its transition from a declining steel-dominated economy to a growing high-tech economy.

We are excellent stewards of the money taxpayers have already invested in Binghamton University. With greater flexibility and additional investment by the state, Binghamton University can be a catalyst for economic growth and sustainable development. We can educate the future workforce and make the discoveries that will be the foundation of the state’s vitality for years to come.

That’s why we need to Think Green. Think Global. Think Binghamton.
