Institutional Effectiveness
The university continues to enjoy an honored reputation as an institution of high quality. First-year retention, at over 90% is among the highest in the nation for research institutions, and the university continues to be high among its peers with regard to four- and six-year graduation rates.xx
In addition, a survey of alumni who graduated three years ago indicated that 96% were satisfied with instruction overall, 54% of alumni were enrolled in graduate study, 3% participated in a term of service program (such as the Peace Corps or Teach for America programs) and more than 91% were employed full or part time. 8% started a family.
All this suggests that the university plays a role as an "engine for growth" for Broome and Tioga counties and New York State. Students who enroll at the university tend to be successful in their educational pursuits, are gainfully employed or enrolled in post-graduate training within three years of graduation, and give back to their communities in the form of increased earnings and increased tax revenue for local governments and the State of New York. This suggests with regard to its funding of the university, the return on investment for the State of New York is high and is sustained well after students graduate.
