Specific Opportunities
Amgen Summer Research Program in Science and Biotechnology
Program provides undergraduates an opportunity for research experience at some of the nation's leading educational institutions, plus some in Europe (see website for list). Plus interaction with faculty mentors, including some of the nation's top academic scientists. Applicants must intend to pursue a Ph.D. or M.D./Ph.D., and be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident. Stipend, plus other financial support.
Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science Undergraduate Cancer Research Training Program
The UCRTP is a 12-week summer research program designed for outstanding minority and underrepresented undergraduate students who are contemplating a career in biomedical-related sciences.
Department of Energy Undergraduate Laboratory Internship
The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Students participate as interns appointed at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.
Department of Homeland Security Summer STEM Internship
A 10-week summer research experience for undergraduates majoring in homeland security related science, technology, engineering and mathematics (HS-STEM) disciplines. Students who demonstrate long-term goals aligned with the DHS mission have the opportunity to conduct research relevant to the DHS mission at various federal research facilities.
Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory
The program focuses on giving opportunities in science and technology to undergraduate college students currently enrolled in four-year colleges and universities in the United States. Internships are offered to students majoring in physics, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and computer science.
Harvard School of Public Health – Summer Program in Quantitative Science (Biostatistics, Epidemiology and Public Health Research
The Summer Program is a relatively intensive 4-week program, during which qualified participants receive an interesting and enjoyable introduction to biostatistics, epidemiology and public health research. This program is designed to expose undergraduates to the use of quantitative methods for biological, environmental and medical research.
Mayo Clinic - Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
Summer research opportunity for sophomores and juniors at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine in Minnesota. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) provides a 10-week research experience working on a wide range of biomedical research questions. Sophomores and juniors planning a career in biomedical research as a PhD or MD/PhD are encouraged to apply. A stipend is provided to cover the cost of travel, housing and meals.
Mickey Leland Energy Fellowship (U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy)
This is a 10-week summer internship program that provides opportunities to minority and female students who are pursuing degrees in science, technology (IT), engineering, or mathematics (STEM majors). Participants have the opportunity to work on focused research projects consistent with the mission of the Office of Fossil Energy. Participants receive a stipend and transportation expenses. Applicants must be at least 18 years of age; a citizen of the United States; be currently enrolled in the sophomore year or higher; and have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Microsoft Summer Internships
These are 12 week summer internships for college students interested in Software and Hardware, Finance, Human Resources, IT/Operations, Marketing and Sales. Stipend, travel expenses, help with housing costs. They are looking for interns with an interest in technology and a desire to solve problems.
NASA Undergraduate Student Research Program
Program offers NASA research and development opportunities to undergraduates. Students receive workforce preparatory experience for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). Students work on practical problems that will see real applications in aerospace or on future NASA missions. Offered at NASA Centers and research support facilities across the country.
NIH National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering
This internship program is for undergraduate biomedical engineering students who have completed their junior year of college. This ten-week program will allow rising senior biomedical engineering students to participate in cutting-edge biomedical research projects under the mentorship of world-class scientists in NIH laboratories.
NIH Summer Internship Program in Biomedical Research
Summer programs at NIH provide an opportunity to spend a summer working side-by-side with leading scientists in an environment devoted exclusively to biomedical research. Most of the laboratories are located in Maryland. Open to undergraduates at any level. Stipends are adjusted yearly, check the website for current information.
National Science Foundation - Research Experiences for Undergraduates Program (REU)
Summer research opportunities in all fields of the sciences (including some social sciences), mathematics, and engineering. Each site, based at a university, consists of about 10 students who work in the research program of the host university. Stipends and in most cases housing and travel funds. Complete list of locations on website, start checking late fall/early spring semester. Students apply to the university hosting the REU, not to NSF.
Naval Research Enterprise Internship Program – Department of the Navy
NREIP provides competitive research internships to undergraduate sophomores, juniors & seniors, and graduate students. Participating students typically spend ten weeks during the summer doing research at DoN laboratories. To participate, a student must be enrolled at an accredited 4 year US college or university and have completed their freshman year before beginning the internship.
Parkinson's Disease Foundation Summer Fellowships
PDF's Summer Fellowship Program is used to support students - from advanced undergraduates to graduate and medical students - in their pursuit of Parkinson's-related summer research projects.
Smithsonian Environmental Research Center (SERC)

Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)
A gateway to graduate education at CIC universities. Goal is to increase the number of underrepresented students who pursue graduate study and research careers. The program helps prepare undergraduates for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and enrichment activities. Applicants must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent resident and plan to pursue a PhD in graduate school. Ph.D.
ThinkSwiss Research Scholarship
Research scholarships for both undergraduates and graduate students to conduct research at a public Swiss university or research institute. Provide a monthly stipend (approximately $1,000 US) for a period of 2 to 3 months. The scholarship is open to outstanding students in all fields with an interest in conducting research in Switzerland.
University of Utah's Materials Research Science and Engineering Center: Research Experience for Undergraduates Summer Program
Research opportunities in Materials Science and Engineering: Plasmonic Metamaterials and Organic Spintronics.
The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents obtaining an undergraduate degree Spring 2014 or after. Women and minority students are especially encouraged to apply.
Whitaker International Undergraduate Study Abroad Scholarship for Undergraduate Biomedical Engineers and Bioengineers
Scholarship provides funding to undergraduate biomedical engineers and bioengineers for a semester or one academic year to pursue coursework in their field in an international setting. Scholarship amounts range from $7,500 for one semester or academic term, to $10,000 for one academic year.
The scholarship is open to U.S. citizens and permanent residents. Applicants must be Sophomores (2nd year), Juniors (3rd year), or Seniors (4th or 5th year), with at least one semester remaining, in an undergraduate BME (or related major) degree program with good academic standing.
Social Sciences
American Economic Association Summer Training Program Minority Fellowship
Six-week program to help talented undergraduate students learn skills and conduct research in economics in preparation for studies at the doctoral level. Primary consideration given to rising Sophomores and Juniors planning on pursuing a PhD in economics. The Minority Fellowships are open to qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents, with a preference for those who are members of historically disadvantaged racial or ethnic minority groups and who advance the diversity of the economics profession.
Anthony Shadid Intern Program, American-Arab Anti-Discrimination Committee (ADC)
Intern program offered by the Research Institute of the ADC, an Arab-American civil-rights organization. Offers a variety of positions for leadership development and educates students on issues of civil rights, the Arab heritage, and current events in the Middle East. While the program is primarily oriented to Arab-American students, they encourage applicants from all ethnic backgrounds. These are 11 week internships in Washington, D.C.. There is a stipend of $1,500 for undergraduates and $2,000 for graduate students.
Center for Strategic and International Studies Internships
The CSIS offers full and part-time internships in the fall, spring and summer for undergraduates, advanced students, and recent graduates who are interested in gaining practical experience in public policy. Interns participate in a variety of activities that support individual programs, including research, writing, and project development. Applicant must be eligible to work in the US.
Charles B. Rangel International Affairs Summer Enrichment Program
Six-week program at Howard University designed to provide students with a deeper appreciation of current issues and trends in international affairs, enhance their knowledge and skills to pursue international affairs careers, and expose them to career opportunities. Open to full-time undergraduate students who will complete their sophomore year before the program begins. The Program encourages the involvement of African American and other minority group students. Students take three academic courses and attend additional seminars. Students receive tuition, travel, room and board, as well as a stipend.
Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program
The Charles G. Koch Summer Fellow Program combines a paid public policy internship with two career and policy seminars. Fellows gain real-world experience, take a crash course in market-based policy analysis, and acquire the professional skills necessary to effect change. Participating internship hosts include more than 80 think tanks and policy organizations across the United States. Koch Summer Fellows work with others on research projects throughout the summer. The program provides housing assistance and travel costs, seminars and speakers, and a stipend.
Heritage Foundation Internship Program
The program is to train, equip, and develop tomorrow's young conservative leaders. Paid interns are given substantive work, acquire policy expertise, and build marketable skills. Interns work with Heritage experts on foreign and domestic policy issues in such areas as energy and the environment, the rule of law, homeland security, and health care. For those interested in business, Heritage offers the opportunity to work in communications and marketing, development, coalition building and outreach, and government relations.
National Park Service - Historic Preservation Training Program
Funded summer internships to train future historians, archaeologists, architects, curators, planners, and archivists by fostering awareness of the National Park Services cultural resource management activities.

Public Policy & International Affairs (PPIA) Junior Summer Institute
Programs focused on preparing students for graduate programs in public and international affairs and careers as policy professionals and other leadership roles in public service. Located at UC Berkeley, Michigan, Carnegie Mellon, Maryland, and Princeton, students apply in their junior year. Underrepresented minority students are encouraged to apply. Recipients receive full tuition for the summer program, room and board, books, GRE prep, and a stipend. After completing the summer program, fellows are recruited by graduate schools who belong to the PPIA Consortium where they are entitled to $5,000 towards tuition - very often they receive well above that amount.
Ralph Bunche Summer Institute
Annual summer program, sponsored by the American Political Science Association, to introduce minority students to graduate study and to encourage application to Ph.D programs. The academically intensive program is designed to simulate the graduate school experience, provide mentoring, and expand academic opportunities for students from underrepresented groups. Application is made in the junior year. The program provides travel, room and board and books, plus a stipend.
