LEAN SIX SIGMA BLACK BELT: SUMMER 2013

About the Course

Some of today's most respected companies—including GE, Motorola, Allied Signal, and Sun Microsystems—have used Lean Six Sigma to improve their organizations. Join the ranks of these successful corporations and let Lean Six Sigma work for you.

This workshop is designed for Lean Six Sigma team leaders and expands upon the skill set taught in the Green Belt certification. This Lean Six Sigma training course at the Black Belt level gives you valuable business tools to organize, coordinate and lead your organization in achieving process and operational excellence. The course content emphasizes the DMAIC (Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control) methodology through analytical and quantitative tools as well as project management, leadership and organizational methods.  The coursework includes instruction on modules in practical DMAIC applications, Failure Mode Effects Analysis, Advanced Lean, Advanced DOE, SPC for non-normal distributions, Optimization, Scheduling & Sequencing, Effective and Efficient teamwork strategies as well as a variety of other tools and analysis methodologies.

A Lean Six Sigma Black Belt (LSSBB) program offered by the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering (SSIE) within the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University is planned for Summer 2013.

Who Should Attend

This course is open to all current BU students as well as alumni, non-BU students, and members of industry and non-profit and government agencies.

You are eligible to participate in this program if you have a Six Sigma Green Belt (or higher) certification from a recognized program (e.g., the Lean Six Sigma Green Belt program conducted in January 2013 or June 2013 by BU or the January 2012 by Dartmouth/BU); a technical society such as, but not limited to, the American Society for Quality or the Surface Mount Technical Association; or another University's offering.   Your prior certification can be from a "non-Lean" Six Sigma program.

Attendance at this course and a grade of 70% or higher on the open book examination due three weeks after the course ends earns the student a Lean Six Sigma Brown Belt.

The student will then have one year to complete a successful Black Belt Project, at which time the Black Belt will be awarded.  The Black Belt project should solve a real problem in any industry, using Black Belt principles.  The BU Black Belt team will coach the candidate during the project completion period; however, it is up to the candidate to find a project.  It is often that the student candidate may use a senior project or MS or PhD thesis material as a Black Belt project.  (If the student chooses to use the senior project or MS or PhD thesis material as a Black Belt project, the BU team need not have access to proprietary information used in the project, nor do they need to be on the student's thesis committee.)

A certificate will be provided to those who successfully complete the Binghamton University Lean Six Sigma Black Belt course. Certification is not necessary to use the tools and generate improvements; however some organizations require certifications for internal and new hire employees in roles which require lean six sigma expertise.

Location/Distance Learning

The course will be held on the Binghamton University campus.  Directions will be sent to registrants.  Course will be held from 9am-4:15pm each day except for Friday, August 16th which will end at 12:15pm.

Students will be eligible to take the course through distance learning.  Each day will be recorded in four seesions; two sessions from the morning lectures and two sessions from the afternoon. A link to each seesion will be provided to view the session 3-4 hours after the recordings. Sessions will be available to view online via ECHO 360 for up to one year.

You must indicate if you wish to take any or all of the course via distance learning on the registration form.   You may attend all sessions via distance learning, all in person, or you may combine by taking some days in person and some days via distance learning.

In order to utilize distance learning, the student must have a computer with a High Speed Internet connection in addition to the other requirements.

A final examination is due three weeks (September 15, 2013) after the course and will measure your grasp of the theory necessary to be a successful Black Belt. This open-book and open-notes test is distributed at the culmination of this workshop, where a score of 70% or greater is required to pass the test. The exam is long and comprehensive.  We recommend that you allot 25-30 hours for completing the exam.

Black Belt certification is conferred upon successful completion of this exam and satisfactory review of your Black Belt project by the Lean Six Sigma teaching staff.

The Black Belt project usually takes three to twelve months of work to complete and is conducted by individuals or teams at their place of business within a year of completing the coursework.  Members of the Lean Six Sigma teaching staff will be available as mentors for candidates during this part of the Black Belt certification process.
