Professional Bio

I entered the field of computer science through the back door. My first degree was in political science from the College of Wooster in Wooster, Ohio. In the years after graduation I completed two master's degrees, one in the teaching of social studies from Columbia University and one in African studies from UCLA. I also taught subjects ranging from physical education to British Commonwealth history to American government to Afro-American history at the high school and community college levels, in places ranging from New Jersey to Massachusetts to Lagos, Nigeria. In the early 1970s, I made the transition to computer science by joining the graduate program which was part of Binghamton University's School of Advanced Technology. Upon graduation I became part of the fledgling Computer Science Department's faculty. I have been part of the Watson School since its founding in 1983 and served as the program coordinator and as a lecturer in the Department of Computer Science until 2005 when I retired. I continue to teach and to coordinate the dual-diploma information systems program. I have lived in the Binghamton area since 1972 and raised a family, which is now spread across the country from Boston, Mass. to Bellingham, Wash.
