We help new students transition to college
In the Engineering Design Division, we're all about ensuring that our first-year engineering students have a rewarding and eye-opening experience into the different fields of engineering offered at the Watson School. We place a great deal of emphasis on the first year experience because it's often the most difficult for any new college student, let alone one who has chosen engineering.
Because of this, we've specifically designed our program to help students overcome this first-year hurdle through:
- personal faculty contact;
- peer support in small, group section meetings;
- detailed introductions to all Watson engineering disciplines and departments;
- hands-on laboratory experience in all of our engineering disciplines;
- a challenging “reverse engineering” project;
- linked courses;
- graduate teaching assistants representing all engineering departments; and
- undergraduate course assistants;
Ultimately, we want to help our students weather their first year of engineering courses, but also:
- successfully transition them into their sophomore year into a discipline of their choosing – Bioengineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or Industrial and Systems Engineering;
- and position them for the long run to have effective, responsible and productive careers in the engineering profession.
