Since our founding in 1983, the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University has developed an outstanding reputation in the areas of small scale systems, electronics packaging, information security and intelligent systems. 

The new 125,000 square foot Engineering and Science building at Binghamton University houses many research laboratories that contain state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. There are several groups in the Engineering and Sciences Building. Listed below are the areas of expertise within the Watson school.

• Acoustics Core Includes an anechoic chamber that creates a sound field that is not affected by acoustic reflections and is isolated from external noises.
• Biofluidics Includes projects in the field of micro/nano/biofluidics and optics such as optical sensing techniques, micro/nanoscale mass transport, lab-on-a-chip systems for biomedical applications, biologically-inspired microfluidic technologies, and colloidal and adhesion dynamics of biological cells.
• Data Center Leverages both physical and virtualization technologies to offer a flexible multi-tier computing environment to support research and the computing needs of the Watson School.
• Materials Testing Core Includes instruments for both synthesizing and characterizing advanced materials at the microscale and nanoscale.
• Microelectronics Core Provides for the design and characterization of microelectronics devices. The Core includes a wide range of instruments for measuring the characteristics of digital, analog, and mixed-signal electronic systems.
• Micro/Nano-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS/NEMS) Conducts fundamental and applied research using state-of-the-art micro and nano scale experimental characterization techniques to study MEMS and NEMS properties and interactions.
• Opto-Mechanics Provides for the the design and manufacture of precision mechanical components of optical devices.
• Seymour Kunis Media Core Provides facilities for research in multimedia, including multimedia security, multimedia forensics, biometrics, steganography and steganalysis, immersive displays, and virtual and augmented reality.
• Survivable Computing Infrastructure Core Provides an environment where researchers design advanced network and computer infrastructure components that continue to provide reliable service despite being under active attack.
• Thermal Fluids Emphasizes heat transfer in electronics, microfluidics and environmental/biological transport phenomena, mathematical modeling and analysis and advanced technology.
• Transport Sciences Core Houses a wide array of state-of-the-art equipment used to conduct fundamental and applied research in the area of transport phenomena (i.e., fluid flow, heat, and mass transfer).
• Vibration Core Includes equipment for testing and monitoring of components and products under vibration and mechanical shock.
