The women’s studies program at Binghamton University offers a multidisciplinary course of study that is committed to inclusive critical understandings of gender relations that are driven by concerns for social justice and human rights. Of special importance for this course of study are three foci: first, the experiences, perspectives and knowledge of “women of color”/”Third World” women, bringing to the fore the complex engagements of gender with race, ethnicity and nationality; second, globalization as a set of forces that are configuring the present and future of gender, and related phenomena such as transnationality, whether due to labor migrations, refuge and asylum seeking, or the networking of social movements; and third, sexuality, with its strong relation to gender. Faculty members from a variety of disciplines offer regular courses in women’s studies. Each semester the women’s studies program publishes a list of courses relevant to the program. Internships and special projects in local agencies are also possible under the supervision of the program’s director.
