Writing Initiative

First Year Writing

Consistent with our commitment to offering highly motivated students an outstanding education grounded in the liberal arts, Binghamton University launched the Binghamton University Writing Initiative in 2008 to provide first-year students a high-quality, intensive college writing experience. course that is informed by current research in rhetoric and writing and that helps them develop skills that are essential for success at the university and beyond. The first products of the Writing Initiative are two new courses (Writing 100 and Writing 111), offered for the first time in Fall 2008, and an intensive mentoring system for faculty and graduate students teaching in the program.

Through these courses and our broader emphasis on writing both in and outside the classroom, the Binghamton community of writers grows. Writing is a lifelong activity, and learning to write well is a process that never ends. The new writing initiative strives to support writers while they are at the university and to encourage them to continue the learning process after graduation.
